Matthew Haanappel wins Boys 100m breast-stroke title: Day three – Australian Age MC Championships
The 17-year-old Matthew Haanappel went rampant and claimed the title of Boys 100m breast-stroke final in 17 to 18 years old class category on the final day of the 2011 Australian Age Multi Class (MC) Championships. The meet was organised at the Australian
Institute of Sport (AIS), in Canberra, on Sunday, October 9.
Haanappel of Nunawading, who had the third fastest seed time, outshined in the double-lap breast-stroke final and snatched the title from his challengers. His fantastic swim in the playoff devastated the hopes of his competitors, who struggled hard to secure
top spot on the podium.
The gold medallist completed his first lap in 45.55 seconds while he ended his second lap in 53.11 seconds to post 1 minute and 38.66 seconds for the gold medal. He was trailed by Mic Auprince of University of NSW, who completed his breast-stroke sprint
in second place.
Auprince, S9 and B8, followed Haanappel on the podium for silver medal after he touched the finishing wall and clocked a time of 1 minute and 26.11 seconds. In the meantime, the crowd experienced an awe-inspiring swim of Queanbeyan’s Bradley Jones, S15,
who clocked a time of 1 minute and 17.60 seconds for bronze medal.
Moments later, Tanya Huebner of VIC Bayside dominated the equivalent event in Girls 19 years and above category, as she posted a phenomenal time of 1 minute and 40.48 seconds to capture gold medal.
Huebner, S6, was chased by T Van Roosmalen of NSW Mingara, who reached the podium for silver medal by submitting a time of 1 minute and 23.98 seconds. Roosmalen, who has S13 disability, remained prominently ahead of his subsequent competitor, Dian Saunders
of Superfins. Saunders, who falls under the disability classes of S6 and B7, concluded his sprint in a time of 1 minute and 44.97 seconds for bronze medal.
Haanappel and Huebner expressed happiness over their easy wins at the national championship. Spectators enjoyed the 100m breast-stroke swims in both age group categories, while the podium finishers were awarded medals and accolades for their aggressive efforts
after the session.
