Matthew Harley Goss missed out from the 11th stage of the Giro d’ Italia
Matthew Harley Goss of Team Orica GreenEdge is having a good season and the cyclist’s stage 3 victory at the Giro d’ Italia 2012 has boosted his confidence for the remaining part of the season.
Goss bagged the opening team’s time trial stage of the Tirreno-Adriatico and secured the top spot at the Tour of Turkey point’s classifications.
He crashed during the 187 kilometre stage 10 of the race and has now been withdrawn from the event.
Both, Mark Cavendish and Matthew collided during the last corner of the event and he was a big absentee at the 11th stage of the race.
Roberto Ferrari of Team Androni Giocattoli opened his 2012 Giro account and picked his first victory of the contest
He finished the race in an impressive time of 6 hours, 49 minutes and 5 seconds and overcame his major rivals.
Francesco Chicchi of Team Omega Pharma-Quickstep, Tomas Vaitkus of Team Orica GreenEdge and Mark Cavendish of Team Sky Procycling achieved the next three spots.
Manuel Belletti of Team AG2R was looking good towards the final kilometres but could not finish amongst the top three.
The Italian occupied the fifth spot while his compatriot Giacomo Nizzolo of Team RadioShack-Nissan achieving the sixth position.
While commenting on the stage 10 crash Goss told Cyclingnews, “I’m not feeling great, Monday’s crash wasn’t ideal”.
Goss was leading the point’s classifications after the ninth stage and the crash has shattered his dreams for the remaining part of the race.
“Some guys were trying to take the corner from the inside and I went out wide to try and take the apex of the corner and they just went straight on”.
“Yesterday wasn’t so bad, but today I’m not feeling so good. My neck and back and hip are aching from the crash”.
“It depends on corner to corner, some corners you take really fast, [then there’s] road surfaces, [if it’s] wet or dry, the sharpness of the corners, there’s a lot of variables”.
It is still not clear if Matthew will ride the remaining stages of the Italian Grand Tour.
However, his absence is definitely a big blow to the Australian side Team Orica-GreenEdge riding its first Grand Tour as a UCI World Tour team.
