Matthew Harley Goss to start the new season with Jayco Bay Cycling Classic 2012
Jayco Bay Cycling Classic is due to start on the New Year’s Day, cyclists from across the globe are anxious to kick off the new season with the four-day race. Former champion, Matt Goss, is contending to make it two in a row by winning the race in 2012.
He sealed a convincing win over his countryman, Michael Matthews, during the previous edition of the race.
After a terrific start to his 2011 season, Goss made full use of his exceptional form and dominated the year with his extraordinary performances.
He claimed stage wins at the Paris-Nice, the Tour of California and the Tour of Oman, along with the first place finish at the Milan-San Remo.
Matt secured an overall victory at the Bay Classic Series and also dominated stage 1 and stage 4 of the event.
The 25-year-old finished second at the Tour Down Under and won the Sprint Classification of the race.
He was looking good to win the UCI Road World Championships 2011 but was outclassed by Mark Cavendish and won the silver medal.
He will ride along the six-time winner of the race, Robbie McEwen, who is even more enthusiastic about fine tuning his form at the Jayco Bay Cycling Classic.
Robbie told Cyclingnews, "I think the main thing for myself and my new teammates as of January 1, we'll be riding together and just getting acquainted with each other's riding style”.
He continued, "There'll be some important work with Matt Goss and Leigh Howard, trying a few things out, learning a bit about ourselves as a combination. It will be an important proving ground and a good test under pressure".
2012 will also serve as a debut season for Team GreenEdge as it will be their first year as a World Tour Team.
After receiving the license, the Australian team is hopeful to make an impression, especially since the best riders are representing the team in 2012.
Goss summarised his plans for the coming season, he is keen to ride at the Tour de France, Giro d’ Italia and the London Olympics. Only time will tell if the Australian can repeat his previous performance to claim the first win of the new season.
