Matthew Hatton defeated by Saul Alvarez to win world welterweight title – Boxing news
The 20 years old prospect Saul Alvarez has defeated European Welterweight Champion Matthew Hatton by winning a unanimous points decision to claim WBC Super Welterweight Title on Saturday night in the main event of HBO’s Boxing After Dark at the Honda Center
in Anaheim, California, USA.
The Saul Alvarez vs. Matthew Hatton match made a history in the boxing world. It was the first biggest championship fight of the year. Both the fighters fought for the first time for a major belt at welterweight division. The 20-year-old’s Mexican pride
became the youngest champion ever to claim the 154lb WBC 154-pound super welterweight belt.
The fight credit goes to the winner, Saul Alvarez who displayed a dominant performance against the younger brother of former world champion Ricky Hatton.
The half of the winning prize money will go directly into the Matthew Hatton’s account. However, he has to pay 20 percent of his $350,000 fight reward as a charge for failing for the second time to make the required 150 lbs.
Saul Alvarez was impressive from the beginning. Saul Alvarez dropped Matthew Hatton to the canvas for couple of times. Matthew Hatton was found to be very aggressive in the first two rounds but the Saul Alvarez counters it very well by using extraordinary
combination of both hands and landing powerful hooks to the body.
He won almost every round of the bout by winning judges scorecards. The 12-round contest was win by him with the final scorecard of 119-108 in his favour. Alvarez connected 47 percent of his 626 total blows and Matthew Hatton landed just 25 percent of his
546 punches.
The fight was in complete control of Saul Alvarez throughout the 12 rounds. He punished Matthew Hatton in every round. Hatton’s nose was bleeding in 2nd round and the crowd was roaring “Mexico, Mexico ” in the Arena.
In the fifth round Hatton was attacking desperately. The first 6 rounds score card was 10-9 in the favor of Saul Alvarez but in 7th round it was 10-8. In 8th round, there was a serious cut to Matthew Hatton’s eye but the fight was not stopped. Matthew Hatton
was down to the canvas in the 10th round.
Then finally the time of standing ovation came in Alvarez’s way when the final bell rang to declare him as a youngest winner of Super Welterweight Unified Championship bout. The WBC 154-pound belt was given to him as a reward of his heart-winning performance.
Huge Mexican crowd support of nearly 12,000 was available to Alvarez, who cheered on the dominant victorious performance of Alvarez at Honda Center in Anaheim.
The unbeaten Saul Alvarez with this victory has improved to as 36 wins including 26 wins by KO, 0 loss of game and 1 draw.

Talking about Matthew Hatton, Saul Alvarez said he is a good fighter with an excellent professional record of 41 wins including 16 KO’s, 5 losses and 2 draws.
On the other hand Matthew Hatton said, “He's a fantastic fighter, but he was just too big. He never really hurt me. It was just a size difference. I want to go back down to my natural weight at welterweight, and hopefully I'll get another shot there.”
Saul Alvarez is now among the top WBC Super Welterweight fighter ranking is on 2nd position. He is number 11 in the world and number 1 United Kingdom in the welterweight division.
