Former legendary Australian opener, Matthew Hayden, has recommended his national selectors to stiffen their selection criteria for the youngsters, advising them not to give the baggy green to a batter whose average in First-Class cricket is less than 50.
Hayden regretfully claims that http://www.senore.com/Cricket/England-c56013, therefore, they are not achieving reasonable success in this format.
He is of the view that 5-day format is not for those players who are unable to deliver match-winning performances.
Talking to the media today, the ex-star said, “There’s not someone you can go to in Shield cricket - even someone like http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Andrew-Graham-Downton-c44379 Cowan for example, he’s averaging a little over 30. I mean, for goodness’ sake. That’s more the British standards. The Australian standards
are - that we average, as a batting unit to make the Test side, 50.”
Hayden has also suggested the selectors and the nation to avoid dropping the senior cricketers including http://www.senore.com/Cricket/MEK-Hussey-c1942, arguing that the team does not have enough options to fill the gap that will take place after the ouster of the duo.
Moreover, he opines that the veteran players’ presence in the camp is necessary for the youngsters to groom well.
Haydos told, “It’s not like dropping a Ricky Ponting or a Michael Hussey - you drop them and their careers are over. “I don’t think Australia can afford to do that right now. I think it’s got to consolidate around those guys for the period in time which
we need to bring up our youngsters, because they’re not ready to play.”
However, the Queensland-born great wants the off-tracked batsman, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Phillip-Hughes-c2185 to leave, avowing that he is not likely to fix his fault lines while staying in the squad.
Hayden’s views have come in the backdrop of the Aussies’ humiliating defeat to http://www.senore.com/Cricket/New-Zealand-c754 in a Test match, played at Hobart last week. The failure was a result of the poor batting as the top Test playing team could not score even 250 in any of its two innings.
Now, the Oz side is preparing for its upcoming 4-Test home series against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/India-c750. With the high-voltage event just two weeks away, the selectors have still not decided on the final squad.
