Matthew Hutchins pockets Men’s 400m freestyle title: Day three – 2011 Commonwealth Youth Games
Matthew Hutchins of New Zealand pocketed gold medal of Men’s 400m freestyle on the concluding day of the 2011 Commonwealth Youth Games, on Sunday, September 11, in Isle of Man.
The 17-year-old Hutchins impressed the aquatic crowd by capturing the title of the event in a splendid time of 3 minutes and 48.92 seconds. Hutchins dominated the qualifying rounds of the event to qualify as the top fastest swimmer into the finals. Nonetheless,
the New Zealander sustained his fastest qualification spot in the final round and pocketed the title of the 400m freestyle event.
Hutchins was followed by Jarrod Poort of Australia, who remained 0.38 seconds slower than him and stepped on the podium for silver medal, by posting a time of 3 minutes and 49.30 seconds. In the meantime, Ieuan Lloyd of Wales earned third position of the
event, by posting a time of 3 minutes and 51.28 seconds for bronze medal.
Matthew Abeysinghe surfaced as the fourth position holder of the freestyle event, after he touched the finishing wall and clocked a time of 3 minutes and 56.69 seconds. He was chased by Oliver Tennant of Wales, who remained just 1.85 seconds behind him on
the concluding wall and reported a time of 3 minutes and 58.54 seconds.
Michael Mincham of New Zealand was the sixth fastest swimmer of the freestyle discipline, as he remained 1.24 seconds slower than Tennant and ended his swim in a time of 3 minutes and 59.78 seconds. He was in a lead of 2.98 seconds over Iacovos Hadjiconstant
of Cyprus, who touched the finishing wall in 4 minutes and 03.76 seconds for seventh position. Meanwhile, Eugene Tee of Australia settled as the eight fastest swimmer of the event, by finishing his swim in a time of 4 minutes and 10.85 seconds.
Hutchins expressed contentment over his victory in the mediocre distance freestyle swim. The crowd appreciated the efforts of all contestants in the respective meet, while the winners received their medals and accolades after the completion of the session.
