Matthew Johnson claims Men’s 400m IM gold medal: Day one – 2011 Commonwealth Youth Games
Matthew Johnson of England claimed gold medal of Men’s 400m Individual Medley (IM) on the initial day of the 2011 Commonwealth Youth Games on Friday, September 9, in Isle of Man.
Johnson showered his noteworthy efforts in the 400m IM, by sustaining his fastest spot of the swim and posting a time of 4 minutes and 15.41 seconds for the gold medal. With his commendable efforts, Johnson easily overwhelmed the efforts of his fellow competitors
and successfully grabbed the first gold medal for his country.
He was followed by Australian swimmer, Eugene Tee, who remained 0.43 seconds behind the champion and reached the podium for the silver medal by submitting a time of 4 minutes and 15.84 seconds. The 18-year-old Australian swimmer was in a significant lead
of 4.69 seconds over his following swimmer, Martin Vogel of South Africa, who submitted a third fastest time of 4 minutes and 20.55 seconds for bronze medal.
Johnson had a comparatively stronger start and he completed the first round of his swim in a time of 58.59 seconds, while Tee and Vogel remained at a prominent distance. Then, the 16-year-old gold medallist almost doubled his lead over both competitors by
finishing his swim in a time of 2 minutes and 03.79 seconds.
Similarly, he continued the same in third round, whereas, the final round was quite a tough match, as Tee geared up his swim but he failed to undo the damage and settled on the finishing wall for the silver medal behind Johnson.
Nonetheless, the fourth position of the event was secured by Mark Szaranek of Scotland, who ended his swim after he touched the finishing wall in a time of 4 minutes and 27.38 seconds. Szaranek was trailed by Matthew Courtis of Barbados and Geoffrey Butler
of Cayman Islands, who concluded their swims, with timings of 4:42.22 and 4:47.41 minutes, respectively.
The arena went wild with the thrilling competition between top-two finishers, while the winners received medals and accolades for their wonderful swims after the session’s conclusion.
