Matthew Johnson clinches Men’s 200m butterfly gold: Day one – 2012 British GAS ASA Nationals
Matthew Johnson of Co Sheffield clinched gold medal of the Men’s 200m butterfly on first day of the 2012 British GAS ASA Nationals in Sheffield, England on Wednesday, June 20.
Johnson showed no mercy to his opponents and sprinted his way towards the finishing end for gold medal. He dictated terms to his opponents from the start and reached the finishing end for gold medal.
With his invincible efforts, he remained almost one body length faster from his following swimmer and tapped the finishing end with the timing of 1 minute and 59.71 seconds.
The gold medallist was chased by Cameron Brodie of Kelly Coll, who stayed 0.85 seconds apart and made his way to the medal rostrum for silver medal with an effort of 2 minutes and 00.56 seconds.
The second position holder was followed by Iain Macmillan of Stockport Mo, who stayed 0.43 seconds apart and proved his eligibility for bronze medal of the discipline by posting a time of 2 minutes and 00.99 seconds.
Fourth spot of the race was secured by Thomas Haffield of Co Cardiff, who remained 0.65 seconds apart and transpired on the finishing blockade with the timing of 2 minutes and 01.64 seconds.
Haffield was trailed by Maksym Shemberev of Ukraine, who remained 0.29 seconds slower and touched the wall for fifth position with the timing of 2 minutes and 01.93 seconds.
Subsequently, sixth position of the discipline was secured by Adam Mallett of Swansea Perf, who was nearly 1.50 seconds behind and tapped the wall with the timing of 2 minutes and 03.28 seconds.
Seventh position of the discipline was secured by Christopher Dove of Derwentside, who stayed 0.26 seconds behind and submitted a time of 2 minutes and 03.54 seconds.
Similarly, dove remained 0.29 seconds apart and cruised his way to the finishing end with an effort of 2 minutes and 03.83 seconds for eighth position.
The session came to an end after the completion of all planned events while Johnson expressed happiness over his victory in the 200m discipline, claiming that he will try to achieve the same at the 2012 London Olympic Games.
