Matthew Johnson conquers Men’s 400m IM prelims – US Open Swimming Championships
Matthew Johnson of Great Britain conquered the qualifying rounds of Men’s 400m Individual Medley (IM) on day three of the 2012 US Open Swimming Championships at Indiana University Natatorium in Indianapolis on Thursday, August 9.
The 17-year-old Johnson demonstrated his stupendous efforts in the distant IM discipline and sprinted his way towards the finishing wall for first position.
Johnson remained marginally ahead of his opponents throughout the race and transpired on the finishing end as fastest qualifying swimmer with an effort of 4 minutes and 20.50 seconds.
His scintillating effort remained 0.27 seconds faster from Stephen Schmuhl of Indiana University, who remained prominent for second fastest qualification spot of the discipline by reporting a time of 4 minutes and 20.77 seconds.
Schmuhl was followed by his teammate, Samuel Trahin, who remained 0.40 seconds slower from his foregoing finisher and ended his swim in third fastest place by submitting a time of 4 minutes and 21.17 seconds.
Similarly, fourth fastest qualification spot of the race was secured by Adam Hinshaw of Palo Alto Stanford, who stayed only 0.05 seconds slower from upsetting his former finisher and clocked a time of 4 minutes and 21.22 seconds.
The 18-year-old Hinshaw was chased by Kyle Whitaker of University of Michigan, who remained 1.71 seconds apart and emerged on the finishing wall as fifth fastest swimmer by reporting a time of 4 minutes and 22.93 seconds.
Following that, Whitaker was followed by Michael Weiss of Wisconsin Aquatics, who stayed 0.49 seconds behind and clocked a timing of 4 minutes and 23.42 seconds for sixth position.
Weiss traced by Maxwell Williamson of Northern KY Clip, who stayed nearly half body length behind and hit the finishing end with an effort of 4 minutes and 24.07 seconds.
Last qualification spot of the discipline was obtained by Alex Wold of Santa Clara Swim Club, who stayed 0.16 seconds apart and posted an effort of 4 minutes and 24.23 seconds for eighth position.
Furthermore, Johnson was contented with his fastest finish in the 400m race and expressed that he would struggle hard to achieve the same in the playoff.
