Matthew Johnson earns Boys 400m IM gold: Day five – European Junior Swimming Championships
Matthew Johnson of Russia earned gold medal of the Boys 400m Individual Medley (IM) on fifth day of the 2012 European Junior Swimming Championships in Antwerp, Belgium on Sunday, July 8.
Johnson stunned the aquatic crowd with his scintillating form in the distant IM event, where he proved his mettle for gold spot on the medal rostrum.
With his epic pace, he stayed half a body length ahead of his strongest challenger, Aleksandr Osipenko of Russia and touched the finishing blockade for gold medal with the timing of 4 minutes and 22.72 seconds.
The champion remained 0.41 seconds faster from his following swimmer, Osipenko, who made his way to the victory stand for silver medal by producing a nice time of 4 minutes and 23.13 seconds.
The second position holder was chased by Mark Papp of Hungary, who suffered a loss of almost two seconds over his preceding swimmer and sprinted his way towards the finishing end as third position holder with the timing of 4 minutes and 25.03 seconds.
Fourth position of the discipline was secured by s***n Makovich of Russia, who stayed 0.52 seconds apart and settled on the wall with the timing of 4 minutes and 25.55 seconds.
Makovich was chased by Kevin Wedel of Germany, who remained almost full body length apart and concluded his race with an effort of 4 minutes and 26.32 seconds for fifth position.
Similarly, Wedel was trailed by Jacob Heidtmann of Germany, who stayed only 0.01 seconds behind and tapped the finishing end with an effort of 4 minutes and 26.33 seconds for sixth position.
Seventh finest spot of the discipline was secured by Max Litchfield of Great Britain, who remained 0.61 seconds slower and hit the wall with the timing of 4 minutes and 26.94 seconds.
Litchfield was chased by his team-member, Nicholas Grainger, who stayed 0.19 seconds away from his foregoing finisher and posted a time of 4 minutes and 27.13 seconds for eighth position.
In addition, Johnson received a huge round of applause from the audience for his alluring efforts at the medal distribution ceremony of the tournament.
