Matthew ‘Mack the Knife’ Macklin speaks about his bout against Sergio Martinez – Boxing News
Matthew Macklin was present at an open workout organised and hosted by DiBella Entertainment yesterday, Wednesday, to speak about his upcoming bout with Sergio ‘Maravilla’ Martinez. The bout, which is scheduled for March 17 at the Madison Square Garden Theatre,
will be for the middleweight world championship.
During the workout, the Irishman answered questions regarding his preparation for the fight. When asked about his training and preparation, Matthew iterated, “Going well man. I’ve had a great training camp. By the time the fight comes, it will be 10 weeks
at Trinity and 7 and a half weeks with Buddy McGirt. Most of the hard work has been done and we are just fine tuning. I don’t have a lot to go now, I’m only have about 4 pounds to go with a few weeks out.”
Furthermore, when Matthew was asked his trainer, Buddy, and for how long the pugilist has been training with him, he said that he trained first in 2008 when he was scheduled to go one on one with Yory Boy Campas and after that, he trained with him again
for a fight that did not happen. Appreciating Buddy’s skills, he said Buddy is a great person and he is well aware of the tactics and techniques used in boxing which makes him the best trainer around.
He was also asked to compare his upcoming opponent Martinez with his previous defeated opponent Felix Sturm. Matthew said that both of them have different fighting styles. According to him, Sturm is a very defensive fighter and he is good at it whereas Martinez
is not. He further said that Sergio is a very different fighter than Sturm and that he uses his upper body and his feet to defend himself. He also said that Marquez has low hands which is the reason why he relies on reflexes and movements.
Lastly, Matthew was asked his 3-year gap and whether he thinks he is ready to take on Martinez after a three-year period of dormancy, on which the Irishman replied that he feels confident enough he can do it.
