Why am I supposed to care about his sexual identity? Why is this part of the story?

  1. Well I am happy that he is openly g*y and won the gold medal.  Not because of the reason that they are going to focus on his sexuality, but because maybe this will be big news for a period of time so I do not have to see Michael Phelps mug on the tv every second I watch the coverage of the Olympics.

  2. then dont

  3. I know it's stupid isn't it the way the media make such a big deal of someones sexuality. Maybe they all think we sashay our way to the finishing line( actually is that such a bad idea?) Maybe I've invented a new sport for g**s there he he

  4. He's g*y and Won Gold, Congrats to him

  5. As to why he is out I don't know, but I do know that when young people who happen to be L*****n or g*y look for 'heroes', they have one in him.

A nice, unaffected gold medal winning guy who is also g*y.

    Good on you Matthew! :-)

And as for heterosexual people 'not mentioning it', we have all heard and read about the various husbands, wives, partners, lovers' quarrels and so on of other athletes, so it's not like they are keeping their heterosexuality 'quiet'!

    Cheers :-)

  6. more poser to him --- i wish him well!!

  7. Just like any other stereo type, why should it matter? Why can't they just say, Matthew Mitchum won the gold medal? Not, that g*y man, or black man, or mexican, or jewish, or catholic, or atheist. Just his name and the country he represents, should be sufficient.

  8. and hes fine

  9. good for him, most athletes are g*y. the good ones anyway

  10. You don't have to care about it, but it is a big deal to some others which is why it's in the story.

  11. so what?

    hes g*y

everyone is equal no matter sexaul orientation etc

good one him hope he keep up the good work

  12. Well, if Matthew Mitchum is g*y and he won a gold medal, OBVIOUSLY the medal should be taken away from him.

After all — aren't the Olympics a *heterosexual* thing, where *real* men and *real* women compete against each other?

I've pretty much concluded by the answers of the fundagelicals here that we g**s and lesbians aren't "real" people — so why would an "unreal" person deserve a gold medal?

Sorry:  I guess I've become a bit toxic being on the receiving end of a little too much of that good, old "love the sinner and hate the sin".

  13. It's part of the story because otherwise the impression is that all Olympic athletes are straight.

    ((Good on you Matthew!))

  14. You might have noticed that in the media s*x sells, people want to read about someone else's private life.  I'm with you and I couldn't care less, but there are people who will be fascinated by his sexuality and it's guaranteed to sell newspapers/magazines and encourage people to tune into TV programs.  That's why it's big news.

  15. because he is the only olympian who is out to the public

  16. The same relevance the personal life of any olympian has.  They ALWAYS do the "human interest" side of certain athletes, talking about their lives, families, etc.  If you're going to complain about this one, you need to ask that they NEVER give details about anybody.

In the workplace, straight people talk all they want about their spouse's and kids - they talk about their sexual identity all day long!  g*y people should be able to do the same thing.

  17. Because the media make a big spectacle about someone's sexuality

  18. im glad for him

  19. The fact that you don't care is actually a sign of progress - for you.  But much of straight society still does not think that g*y people can, or should,  be championship athletes.  When a openly g*y person wins something like that, it helps people who are struggling with coming out to understand that they can still be whatever they want to be, even if they are g*y.  Can you say 'positive g*y role model?'

And as a g*y American, since the American divers didn't win, I'm d**n proud that a g*y one did.

And remember, everyone knows now that Greg Louganis is g*y, but when he was diving, we did not.
