Matthew Mott welcomes Simon Jones’ decision to play first-class cricket – Cricket News Update
Glamorgan's head of elite performance Matthew Mott has welcomed http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Simon-Jones-c2531’ decision to play six county championship fixtures for the club in 2013, saying the inclusion of the former England seamer will provide a massive boost to their championship campaign next season.
Jones, the 33-year-old right-arm fast bowler who helped England to their Ashes triumph in 2005 but has not donned the Three Lions’ uniform since then due to a recurring knee injury, is eyeing a return to red-ball cricket.
He remained involved almost solely in one-day cricket over the past seven years. However, after staying fit for a year, he is eying a Test comeback through first class cricket.
In a bid to return to five-day cricket, he renegotiated his contract with Glamorgan, agreeing to play six first class matches for the club the next season, after having played in only one county championship fixture this summer.
The Glamorgan CCC management confirmed the signing on Sunday, with the county’s head coach http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Middlesex-c817 at the end of the 2012 season.
“Over the past few months, we have been working closely with Simon,” said Mott. “He’s in great shape and he is keen to play in more four-day games next season.”
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Michael-Hogan-c1956 will be joining the club ahead of the next summer. Meanwhile, attacking batsman Chris Cooke has also extended his contract at the Sophia Gardens until the end of the 2014 season.
The South-African born player, who is currently playing for Cape Town in his native country’s domestic circuit, also wants to break into the championship squad, revealed Mott.
“Chris has made a positive impact during his short career here. Having established himself in our one-day sides we look forward to developing his career as he pushes for inclusion in our four-day team,” said http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Mott-c77775.
“We have a competitive squad with a good balance of experienced and talented young players …. Being able to expose high impact players such as Simon and Chris to four-day cricket will provide a massive boost to our championship campaign,” he added further.
