Matthew Selt books quarter-final spot beating Ryan Day: 2012 Australian Goldfields Open
Second round clashes of the 2012 Australian Goldfields Open snooker tournament are underway at the Bendigo Stadium arena in Victoria, Australia featuring top cuemen who booked their places after performing tremendously in the first round stage of the event.
In one of the second round encounters, England’s Matthew Selt played brilliantly producing impressive game play at the baize and trashed Welsh potter Ryan Day by the score line of 5-3 to book his place in the quarter-final stage of the contest.
The first session of the match was totally dominated by Selt as he breezed into 3-1 lead firing some cracking clearances of 77 and 50. However, despite tumbling two frames down, Day did not let his opponent take him down and bounced back in the second session
with two frame victories. These two frames did not help Day at all because Selt took the next two frames to win the game 5-3.
In his post match interview with World Snooker, Selt said, “That was quite a tough game. I didn't play very well, Ryan didn't play very well, but I think the game was determined by the run of the ball. We both missed numerous chances, I fluked the pink in
the first frame that was a big turning point. My safety was fantastic again.”
The Englishman further said, “I created a lot of chances, I missed a lot of chances, but when I was missing them I was quite fortunate to get away with quite a few.”
Selt will be facing the winner of the 2012 Snooker Shootout snooker tournament, compatriot Barry Hawkins in the quarter-final stage. The Englishman has not played against Hawkins before so the clash will be interesting to watch as both players have only
one goal in mind and that is to take the ultimate glory home.
Matthew was up against the defending champion, compatriot Stuart Bingham in the first round where he emerged as victorious over Bingham to set up Day match. The second round competition between Selt and Day was supposed to be a tussling game because the
pair had played sensibly from the beginning of this tournament and was in good shape.
