Matthew Selt downs Stephen Hendry to face Shaun Murphy in quarters – 2011 Australian Goldfields Open
Matthew Selt has surged into the quarter-final as he defeated the seven-time world champion Stephen Hendry by a frame score of 5-1 in a best-of-nine frame last-16 match of the 2011 Australian Goldfields Open tournament.
The 2011 Australian Goldfields Open tournament is being held in Victoria, Australia from July 18 to July 24.
Selt is on an incredible roll in Australia. He started off from the third qualifying round and has put a shocker on the cards by beating the likes of Adrian Gunnell, Ricky Walden, John Higgins (the reigning Crucible winner) and the King of Crucible, Stephen
Hendry.
Selt has now set up a potential clash with the world number seven, Stephen Maguire, in the quarter-final.
Selt was pretty delighted on his win over Hendry as he knows Hendry is widely considered as one of the greatest snooker players of all times. He told the media he was under a bit of pressure but Hendry could not play well which allowed him to clinch victory.
While speaking on his inclusion, he said, “There was a bit of pressure for me to win as I was playing Stephen Hendry and he's the greatest winner of all time - he's like a machine. After beating John I felt amazing but I was brought down to Earth with that
performance. I didn't feel like I did yesterday and Stephen didn't play well at all.”
It was not one of the best performances from Selt either and he admitted it. He stated he could not sleep well before the match but he was lucky he did not have to deal with the best of Hendry.
Selt added, “I only had five hours sleep last night so that might not have helped but if Stephen had played well he would've won. I thought it would be a good idea to get out here as early as possible but I've only had one decent night's sleep.”
Matthew Selt is only two steps away from reaching the final now. Let’s see if he is able to maintain his incredible run or not.
