Matthew Selt relives memories of 2012 Australian Goldfields Open snooker tournament
Previous snooker season was a convincing finish for the English potter, Matthew Selt as he was able to produce some noticeable snooker performances in some important events. He played impressively in the Players Tour Championship (PTC) series but still did
not manage to win any of the events. However, his form in the previous season gave him a lot of confidence and he entered the new snooker season with renewed hopes and objectives.
The start of the new snooker season was not that good for the Englishman as he crashed out of the 2012 Wuxi Classic snooker event qualifying session in the second round at the hands of the former World Snooker Championship winner, Peter Ebdon by the score
line of 4-5. Nevertheless, the English cueman did not lose hope and played superbly in the qualifying session of the second major ranking event, 2012 Australian Goldfields Open.
The 27-year-old Englishman ousted Thailand’s Thepchaiya Un-Nooh by the score line of 5-3 in the third round qualifier while Wales’ Jamie Jones in the fourth round of the session by 5-2 to book his place in the initial round of the event.
He played sensibly in the Aussie event and made his way to the quarter-final stage of the clash where he lost to the eventual winner, Barry Hawkins by 3-5. The Englishman has some memories of the event which he shared with his fans in his recent post on
the official website of World Snooker.
He wrote, “I beat Stuart Bingham 5-4 in my first match and that was a great win for me because I'd never played anyone defending a title before. That gave me a real boost of confidence. Then I beat Ryan Day 5-3, I didn't play well but had a lot of run of
the ball.”
He added, “In the quarters I played Barry Hawkins and actually played better than I had done in the other two matches. It was a really high standard and I only missed a couple of balls. Barry's safety was superb and he scored heavily as well to beat me 5-3.”
Selt is now all set to face new challenges in the UKPTC Event 2 and the 2012 World Snooker European Tour starting from August 18.
