Matthew Selt sees off Stuart Bingham in Round 1 of 2012 Australian Goldfields Open
After a major upset of Ali Carter’s defeat at the hands of China’s Cao Yupeng, snooker lovers present at the Bendigo Stadium arena saw another upset result. The defending champion of the 2012 Australian Goldfields Open snooker tournament, England’s Stuart
Bingham crashed out of the tournament at the hands of compatriot Matthew Selt by the score line of 5-4.
Selt played amazingly against Bingham and pushed him to his limits. He went neck-and-neck with the defending champion and finished the first session at 2-2. The real battle began in the second session where each of them was trying to get a hold on the overall
lead. In this tussle, both potters dragged the game into the decider frame where Selt was victorious.
While speaking to World Snooker after his match, Selt said, “I thought my safety was pretty good throughout. I had bundles of chances in the first four frames, it could have quite easily been 4-0. I made a pretty big error at 2-0, I had a good chance to
clear up from fifty behind, but missed the green off its spot.”
He added, “I was a bit disappointed at 2-2 at the interval. Then all of a sudden I was 4-3 behind and he looked like he'd got a bit of momentum. But after that I managed to capitalise on his mistakes.”
Bingham performed brilliantly in the 2012 Wuxi Classic snooker tournament and made his way into the final encounter of the contest where he lost to Ricky Walden by the score line of 10-4. During his Wuxi Classic campaign, he even compiled a maximum 147 break
which showed that he is in real good form and can make an appearance in the upcoming snooker events of the new season.
However, he was hopeful to retain his title with his classy performance in the 2012 Australian Goldfields Open. His form in the 2012 Wuxi Classic snooker event gave him a lot of confidence to produce fireworks at the Bendigo Stadium arena and reclaim the
Aussie title. Nevertheless, despite his good form, he was unable to dominate his first round opponent, Selt and dropped down against him.
