Matthew Spence captures Men’s 50m butterfly title: Day two – 2011 Australian University Games
Day two of the 2011 Australian University Games got off to a sparkling start with the thrilling performance of Matthew Spence of University of New South Wales in the butterfly final heat, in Gold Coast, Australia, on Wednesday, September 28.
The session of the meet organized the Men’s 50m butterfly final race, in which Spence gave his best attempt and clinched the gold medal on the podium by posting an impressive time of 25.37 seconds. In the corresponding race, Matthew won the preliminary heat
with a sterling mark of 26.18 seconds.
Meanwhile, Sam Mcconnell of University of Sydney secured silver medal on the podium by submitting a winning time of 25.47 seconds. Mcconnell earlier won the Men’s 100m butterfly title on the podium. Shane Kingsbury of University of New South Wales took home
the bronze title of the platform by posting a mark of 25.49 seconds.
In the corresponding swim, Stephen Parkes was placed fourth with a mark of 26.07 seconds and Grant Irvine of Queensland University of Technology earned fifth place honours with a time of 26.09 seconds. Earlier, Parkes captured the Men’s 200m Individual Medley
crown of the current meet.
Mark Raymond of University of Melbourne settled sixth in a time of 26.39 seconds, while Bruce Mcgregor of Bond University was placed seventh with an inspiring mark of 26.40 seconds. Shaun Abbott of University of New South Wales rounded out the top eight
swimmers of the respective meet after he touched the wall in a time of 26.55 seconds.
Additionally, Kyle Richardson snagged Men’s 50m freestyle crown with a sparkling mark of 22.69 seconds. Gene Kubala of Bond University grabbed silver on the podium with a time of 23.35 seconds. Last, but not the least, Bruce Mcgregor settled for bronze medal
after he touched the finishing wall and ended his swim in a time of 24.07 seconds.
The 2011 Australian University Games is a good opportunity for young athletes of Australia to prepare themselves hard for their futuristic events. The championships will conclude on September 30, 2011.
