Matthew Stevens looking to get in top 8 of World Snooker Rankings – Snooker news
The Welsh Dragon, Matthew Stevens, is eyeing a position among the top 8 of the World Snooker Rankings.
The former world number four, Stevens, has already reached the last 16 projected seedings after beating Gerard Greene by a frame score of 4-2 in a best-of-seven of the Players Tour Championship 2011 held in the Helix Theatre, Dublin, Ireland this Wednesday.
The players traded the first four frames until classy breaks of 80 and 51 from Stevens in the last two frames finished the matters off.
The 33-year-old, Stevens, said he is not satisfied with his performance as it could have been even better. However, on the same note he also mentioned that he is pretty confident to have himself in all remaining three events this season, which is the right
direction.
Stevens, who has also qualified for the 2011 World Snooker Championship after beating Fergal O’Brien by a frame score of 10-9, said that he is practising a lot and is also enjoying the results by winning matches.
Starting with the 25th ranking, he said he wants to finish off the season well so that he gets back into the top 8, the place where he belongs.
He also mentioned that probably he was not practising that well for the matches but now when he has won all the first round matches this year after playing at every venue he is back in form. However, he also highlighted the fact that every match ahead is
going to be a tough one as it a tournament of the top 24 players and everyone wants to win it.
Stevens has now set up his clash against another Welshman, Dominic Dale, who has also qualified for the 2011 World Snooker Championship and is one of the five strong Welsh contestants.
It is going to be a promising match between the two as the spaceman, Dale, is also playing at the top of his form. He beat Michael Holt, the man who outplayed Marco Fu by 4-1 in the PTC round 1 in the final qualifying round of the world championships by
a frame score of 10-6.
Stevens, who is a very close friend of Dale, said that he is going to be looking for a revenge match this time as Dale has beaten him twice recently in the PTCs. However, on the same note he has also mentioned that he has known Dale from his childhood and
it is going to be a cutthroat competition.
