Spectators present at the Bendigo Stadium arena in Victoria witnesses some outstanding snooker clashes on the opening day of the 2012 Australian Goldfields Open snooker tournament. Major names of the game displayed classy skills to click their first victories
and move into the second round of the event with heads held high having ultimate goal of winning the title.
Wales’ Matthew Stevens entered the arena to take part in his first round match against the Chinese cueman, Liang Wenbo. The Welshman missed the 2012 Wuxi Classic snooker tournament due to his back injury which really affected his ranking points in World
Snooker Rankings.
However, he was feeling very confident after having fully recovered and believed that he can perform better in the Aussie event. He displayed impressive skills to beat his opponent 5-3. Stevens feels quite pleased with a superb start of the event.
While speaking to World Snooker, Stevens said, “It was a struggle, you get that sometimes, not every match is one-visit stuff. People forget that it is a hard game and you do miss a few now and again so you've just got to take it. But sometimes it's more
pleasing to win playing badly because there's always room for improvement.”
The Welsh cueman added, “I didn't expect much coming here, but it is nice to get some points on the board because it's my first match that I've won this season and I'm just pleased to get through.”
He started pretty well in the opening match and dominated the first session of the game with 3-1 score line. The Welsh potter pocketed a tremendous break of 128 in the third frame to cruise into three-frame lead. Meanwhile, Wenbo sprang back into the game
in the opening of the second session and secured a strong position claiming two-frame wins firing two impressive knocks of 67 and 71.
Nevertheless, Wenbo’s impressive game play was not enough to stop him from losing at the hands of Stevens. The Welshman compiled cracking clearances to win the next two frames and added first victory of the event in his account. He has now successfully placed
himself in the second round of the event.
