Matthew Stevens pulls out of 2012 Wuxi Classic snooker tournament – Snooker Update
After performing brilliantly in the previous snooker season, the Welshman Matthew Stevens finished his campaign convincingly in the circuit. The last tournament he played in the last season was the 2012 World Snooker Championship where he reached the semi-final
encounter. He played convincingly against his semi-final opponent Ronnie O’Sullivan but was unable to win the match and tumbled down by the score line of 17-10.
He was aiming to start the new snooker season with new aims and targets but unfortunately his hopes have ended because he will not be taking part in the first event of the new season, the 2012 Wuxi Classic. He is suffering from a back problem and he needs
to get treatment as early as possible. The back problem is not new for him as he faced this problem in the last snooker season as well.
The Welshman has informed the snooker governing body, World Snooker about his decision and the draws of the 2012 Wuxi Classic has been changed accordingly. He was up against Englishman Joe Perry in the opening round of the event. Perry has now got a walkover
and will automatically qualify for the second round of the tournament on Chinese soil.
After World Snooker confirmed his unavailability, Stevens updated his Facebook status, “I am sorry to say that I have had to withdraw from The Wuxi Classic which is scheduled to start on Monday due to problems with my back. I hope that this will not be a
ongoing issue and hope to be ready in time to compete in The SangSom 6 Red World Championship on the 2nd of July.”
This year’s Wuxi Classic was given the status of a major ranking snooker contest because of its increasing popularity in China and the fans that came to watch their favourite potters at the arena. The competition will definitely bring interesting matches
for snooker lovers.
The event will be featuring the likes of 2012 UK Championship winner Judd Trump, the World number One and the defending Champion Mark Selby, the former four-time World Snooker Champion John Higgins and the former two-time World Snooker Championship winner
Mark Williams.
