Matthew Swanston clinches Men’s 50m backstroke gold: Day two – 2012 Canadian Summer Nationals
Matthew Swanston of NEW clinched gold medal of the Men’s 50m backstroke on second day of the 2012 Canadian Summer Nationals at the Edmonton Kinsmen Sport Centre in Edmonton on Friday, July 20.
The 21-year-old Swanston smothered his challengers in the shortest backstroke discipline in a comfortable manner as he showed urgency towards the finishing blockade for gold medal.
With his immaculate efforts, he enjoyed a lead of two arm strokes over his following swimmer and hit the finishing blockade for first position with a wonderful timing of 25.88 seconds.
The gold medallist was followed by his team-member, Jeffrey Swanston, who stayed 0.30 seconds apart and snared silver medal of the discipline by posting a nice time of 26.12 seconds.
Third finest spot of the event was obtained by Omar Mahmoud Arafa of OAK, who stayed 0.14 seconds away from his former finisher and ended his swim with the timing of 26.26 seconds.
The bronze medallist was trailed by Adam Best of Go Kingfish, who was only 0.02 seconds slower and settled on the finishing wall as fourth fastest swimmer by clocking a time of 26.28 seconds.
Similarly, Best was trailed by Thibault Delecluse of PPO, who stayed 0.20 seconds slower from his former finisher and touched the finishing end with an effort of 26.48 seconds for fifth position.
The 23-year-old Delecluse was chased by Kyle Haas of HHBF, who suffered a loss of 0.52 seconds over his former finisher and secured sixth position of the event by submitting an effort of 27.00 seconds.
Seventh finest spot of the race was obtained by Ivan Cocunubo of CNG, who remained 0.12 seconds away from overpowering his former finisher and hit the finishing end with an effort of 27.12 seconds.
Cocunubo was chased by Russell Wood of CASC, who was only 0.01 seconds slower from his preceding swimmer and ended eighth in the event with an effort of 27.13 seconds.
In addition, Swanston was extremely happy with his national gold winning struggle and said that he would train harder to improve his pace and defend his title at the upcoming swimming events.
