Matthew Targett and Emily Selig capture gold medals - 2011 Canet En Roussillon
Matthew Targett and Emily Selig have secured gold medals in their respective events at the second last stop of Mare Nostrum Series in Canet En Roussillon.
The Mare Nostrum is a four stop international swimming series, which will conclude after a final stop in Monaco on June 12, 2011.
Targett, who won the silver medal in the 50m freestyle category at the Australian National Swimming Championships, dominated his sprint in the 50m event at the Canet En Roussillon. Selig proved her eligibility for the gold crown of the Women’s 200m breast-stroke
in scintillating fashion.
Targett claimed the title of the event in an impressive time of 22.19 seconds. He was followed by South African swimmer, Roland Schoeman, who was slightly away from him and stepped on the podium for the silver medal in 22.49 seconds. Targett’s team-member,
Cameron Prosser, followed them on the podium for the bronze medal, submitting an effort of 22.54 seconds.
On the other hand, Selig demonstrated her skills by touching the wall in a time of 2 minutes and 27.27 seconds for the gold medal. She tied with Joline Hostman, who also won the gold medal with her, by posting the same time. They were followed by Marina
Garcia Urzainqui, who reached the podium for the bronze medal, clocking a time of 2 minutes and 27.71 seconds.
Head coach to Swimming Australia, Leigh Nugent, was delighted with the efforts of Australian swimmers and said, “The highlight was Matt Targett winning the 50m freestyle tonight. He swam with a real will to win over a very talented group of opponents.”
While acknowledging swims of other swimmers, Nugent said, “There were also two real breakthrough swims tonight in Emily Selig producing a win in her first open international meet, and Kenneth To coming a close second to Laszlo Cseh in the 200m IM and breaking
the two-minute mark in the process.”
He also added that their stunning performances at this international meet have lifted the hopes of Australian fans at the upcoming 2011 Shanghai World Championships, during July.
