Matthew Targett and Gerhard Zandberg excel in Men’s events - 2011 Canet En Roussillon
Matthew Targett and Gerhard Zandberg lifted their performances in the Men’s swimming events to secure gold medals in the 50m freestyle and the 50m back-stroke categories respectively, at the second last stop of 2011 Mare Nostrum Series, in Canet.
The session started with the finals of the 50m freestyle, 50m back-stroke, 50m breast-stroke, 50m butterfly and the 200m Individual Medley (IM) in the Men’s category.
The 50m freestyle was the first category of the session, where Australian sprinter, Matthew Targett, cruised his way towards the finishing wall to claim the title of the short distance freestyle swim. He won the gold medal in a time of 22.19 seconds, staying
ahead of his following swimmers, Roland Schoeman and Cameron Prosser. Schoeman clocked a time of 22.49 seconds to pocket the silver medal in the 50m event. The bronze medal was captured by Prosser, who finished third on the wall, producing a time of 22.54
seconds.
In the 50m back-stroke, South African swimmer, Gerhard Zandberg, emerged on the finishing wall as the fastest swimmer. Zandberg occupied the gold medal of the event in a marvellous time of 24.96 seconds. The South African swimmer remained only 0.06 seconds
away from his next swimmer, Benjamin Treffers of Australia, who touched the wall for silver medal, with a time of 25.02 seconds. They were followed by Junya Koga of Japan, who touched the wall for bronze medal, producing a time of 25.29 seconds.
Next was the 50m breast-stroke, where another South African swimmer, Cameron Van Der Burgh, proved his eligibility for the title of the event. Van Der Burgh touched the wall for gold medal, producing a fastest time of 27.72 seconds. He was followed by Japan’s
Ryo Tateishi and Russia’s Aleksandr Triznov, who settled on the podium for the silver and bronze medal, with timings of 27.88 and 28.05 seconds, respectively.
Moments later, Targett once again appeared on the starting blocks, for the 50m butterfly event. The Australian swimmer, who already claimed the title of the 50m freestyle, won his second gold medal of the championship, by touching the wall in 23.43 seconds.
Roland Schoeman of South Africa and Rafa Munoz Perez of Spain followed him on the podium for the silver and bronze medals, with timings 23.86 and 23.88 seconds, respectively.
The last event of the session was the 200m IM, where Laszlo Cseh secured the gold medal with a timing of 1 minute and 58.99 seconds. He was followed by Australian swimmer, Kenneth To, who obtained the silver medal for clocking a time of 1 minute and 59.89
seconds. Austria’s Jukic Dinko won the bronze medal, by posting a time of 2:01.35 minutes.
