Matthew Targett claims Men’s 50m butterfly title – 2012 FINA Swimming World Cup, Moscow
Matthew Targett of Australia claimed gold medal of the Men’s 50m butterfly on opening day of the 2012 FINA/ARENA Swimming World Cup in Moscow, Russia on Wednesday, October 17.
The Australian swimmer smothered hopes of his opponents in the shortest butterfly discipline and pocketed the crown. He stayed in a comfortable lead over his opponents and earned his way to the top of medal rostrum for gold medal.
His commendable pace remained half a body length ahead of his toughest challenger and tapped the wall for gold medal with a timing of 22.56 seconds.
The gold medallist was followed by Jason Dunford of Kenya, who stayed 0.53 seconds apart and emerged on the finishing blockade for silver medal with an effort of 23.09 seconds.
Dunford was trailed by Evgeny Korotyshkin of Russia, who suffered a loss of only 0.03 seconds from his foregoing finisher and surfaced on the wall with a timing of 23.12 seconds.
The third position holder was followed by Alexander Padalets of Russia, who was 0.54 seconds slower and ended his race in fourth best place by posting a time of 23.66 seconds.
The Russian swimmer was traced by Alexei Puninski of Croatia, who was 0.15 seconds apart and settled on the wall as fifth best finisher by submitting an effort of 23.81 seconds.
Sixth spot of the race was obtained by Evgeny Koptelov of Russia, who remained 0.14 seconds slower from his preceding swimmer and emerged on the finishing end with the timing of 23.95 seconds.
Subsequently, Koptelov was followed by his team-member, Evgeny Sedov, who remained only 0.04 seconds slower from his foregoing competitor and hit the wall with an effort of 23.99 seconds for seventh position.
Last spot of the race was obtained by Mauricio Fiol Villanueva, who failed to make any considerable improvement in his timing. Villanueva remained 0.19 seconds away from overwhelming his preceding swimmer and touched the wall with an effort of 24.18 seconds for eighth position.
In addition, Targett was contented with his top finish in the race and received awards and accolades at the victory ceremony of the race.
