Matthew Villanueva grabs impressive win over Bruno Escalante on Soleo Boxeo Tecate – Boxing News
Matthew Villanueva, America’s third best super flyweight, put forth the Californian boxing fans an exciting performance and grabbed a unanimous decision win over fellow countryman Bruno Escalante, in an eight-round non-title bout held on June 23, 2012.
The duo co-headlined the pay-per-view organised and promoted by Dan Goossen of Goossen Tutor. The ring for the showdown, televised live on Telefutura’s boxing show ‘Soleo Boxeo Tecate’, was set up at Sportsmans Lodge, Studio City, California, United States.
Apart from the above bout, the jam-packed arena also enjoyed the non-title eight-round headline bout between Rico Ramos and Efrain Esquivias. The undercard also saw John Molina take on Miguel Angel Munguia in a non-title light welterweight clash.
Matthew, 25, was entering career’s ninth bout, boasting an undefeated streak. The young Californian proud, in a very short career, has become well known for being a knockout pounder.
With all his seven wins coming via knockout, Matthew was entering the ring with substantial advantage in his favour. It was predicted that Matthew would obliterate the rookie Bruno in the very initial rounds but this did not happen at all.
Despite possessing less experience, Bruno gave Matthew most probably the toughest time of his life. During the whole bout, Matthew strived extremely hard to knock the 23-year-old out but every time when he was confident of stunning Bruno, the Hawaii lad
returned with two-fold force.
Bruno visibly took substantial beating but the whole arena praised his resilience for not losing his senses. Matthew pushed Bruno several times to the rope and battered him with full force but the latter did not give up at all.
At the end of the clash, Matthew was unanimously pronounced as the winner by 79-73, 78-74, and 77-75 scores. After the bout, even Villanueva praised his opponent and stated, “That was the toughest fight I've ever had. He came to win, and he was much stronger
than I thought. The kid can take a punch, he was taking everything but the kitchen sink.”
While explaining his feelings, Matthew further added, “I really thought that the ref was going to come in and stop it on a few occasions when I was getting him against the ropes and just tagging him, but he stuck in there and made it exciting.”
With this victory, Matthew has collected his first decision win whereas Bruno was the unlucky lad who left the ring with the career’s very first loss.
