Matthew Wildie hooker for Wakefield Trinity Wildcats gets two-year contract extension – Rugby news
Belle Vue based professional rugby league club, Wakefield Trinity Wildcats, has announced a two-year extension to the contract of their pivotal hooker, Matthew Wildie.
Officials confirmed the news in an announcement made on the club’s official website on Thursday May 26. Wildie has signed the two-year contract with the squad on May 20th to further his career in the Super League Championships. On the same Friday,
Castleford knocked out the Wildcats from the Challenge Cup in the 10th minute of extra time.
The 20-year-old Wildie is a utility back player but prefers to play at the hooker position. Mathew Wildie joined the Wakefield Trinity Wildcats academy in 2003/04. The academy’s development program has helped him to earn a place in the England Under-16 national
rugby union team.
Wildie has shown his delight on the signing of the contract that would enable him to feature for the Wildcats senior side for two more years. He said, “I'm really happy to have signed another contract, ever since I was a child all I have wanted is play for
Wakefield.”
Wildie joined the senior side during the 2010/11 season and so far has made nine appearances for the senior team. He started the match for the senior side on a few occasions and has lived up to the management’s expectations in those senior side clash.
The former junior international, Wildie has expressed his hopes that the contract will allow him to further learn the art of the game and develop into a better player which allow him to confirm his place in the seniors side. He said, “I’d like to thank everyone
at the Club for giving me this opportunity. I’m looking forward to a great few years here and I hope I cement myself as first team regular.”
Wakefield Trinity Wildcats Chief Executive, James Elston, has welcomed the signing of their impressive youngster. He said, “It’s fantastic to have Matty on board, he epitomises everything we want to do with the future of Wakefield Trinity Wildcats and that
is to sign and keep local home grown talent.”
Elston further added that Wildie’s exceptional on the field and most importantly, his attitude and character off the field have earned him the contract with the senior side. He praised Wildie’s hard working attitude and eager to learn approach.
Wildcats Head Coach, John Kear, has also welcomed the signing of the Wildie. He added that Wildie has made the most of the opportunities the club has provided to him in the season. Kear assured the youngster of his and the coaching staff’s support to enhance
his skills and help Wildie establish himself as a formidable back row player.
