Matthew Zions leads after third round of Saint-Omer Open
Australian ace Matthew Zions smashed a score of 4-under par 67 in the third round of €600,000-Saint-Omer Open, presented by Neuflize OBC, to take a three-stroke lead over Daniel Denison and George Coetzee.
Zions teed off from the front on Saturday and reeled seven birdies against three bogeys to compile a three-day aggregate of 6-under par. The Aussie made a very slow start, as the crowd saw him leave the opening five holes for par.
The situation became even worse, when the 32-year-old failed to save par at the sixth hole. Making up for the loss, Zions rolled a 10-foot long birdie putt on the immediate hole and managed to wipe off the bogey effect from the
scorecard. Similar course of action was seen on the closing two holes that compelled the player to seal the front nine with a score at par.
In pursuit of stepping into the final round as a leader, Zions marched onto the back nine with a different game plan. He analysed that the direction of the wind was towards southeast, which meant that it would take lot of muscle
power and an accurate club selection to drive the ball onto the fairway. Making use of the irons and wedges, the player birdied three holes in the start and clamped two more towards the end.
He wrapped the back nine with a score of 4-under par, which made the foundation of his lead.
“I feel like I'm getting better each day, particularly with my putting, and the hole is looking big right now. This is a good spot to be in and I'm excited about tomorrow. It is so windy out there, that it's borderline not being
able to play. But I hit it great and putted amazingly. Everyone is going to make bogeys you have to accept that. You just have to give yourself a chance to make par and avoid any big numbers,” said Zions, while commenting on his game.
This is the first time that Zions has stepped into the final round as a leader. But will he turn this lead into a victory is anyone's guess.
