Matthew Zions wins Saint-Omer Open
Matthew Zions smashed a score of two-under par 69 in the final round of the Saint-Omer Open to lift the trophy alongside €100,000 worth of prize money. The European tour event, presented by Neuflize OBC, took place at the par-71
Aa Saint Omer Golf Club in Lumbres, France.
Zions teed-off from the front and reeled four birdies against two bogeys, which gave him an edge of seven strokes over Daniel Denison, Craig Lee and Peter Gustafsson. The Aussie remained vaulted in front of inclement weather conditions
and did not lose his cool, which ultimately led to his maiden victory. The winner par-equaled the closing four holes and marched in his champion walk towards the winner’s podium.
When asked how he felt after lifting a trophy, Zions said, “It feels like I’m dreaming. The last four holes I was wondering when I could start thinking about winning, and when would be too soon that it tempted fate. I had a lump
in my throat a couple of times.”
Commenting on his game, Zions said that he was proud of his ball striking, which had been outstanding throughout the week. He said that he hardy missed any greens, which was the result of sheer hard work.
He also talked about his immediate plans and said that he had was withdrawing from the French Open qualifying tournament and instead would fly back to London to celebrate the victory with his family.
“I’m supposed to be playing French Open qualifying tomorrow but there’s no chance I’m going to that now. Hopefully I can get back to London tonight to celebrate this win with my wife and two little girls,” added Zions.
Gustafsson emulated a score similar to the winner, despite dropping five shots in the final eighteen holes. Meanwhile, Lee who carded two bogeys and one birdie in the crucial moment, jumped in joy while describing his experience.
The runner-up told the press that it was hard to catch the winner, but despite that, he was pleased for finishing in second place, as it was his career high.
