Matthias Bachinger/Benjamin Becker outclass Yves Allegro/Stephane Bohli in the quarter-final of the Status Athens Open Doubles
German duo of Matthias Bachinger and Benjamin Becker took down the Swiss pair of Yves Allegro and Stephane Bohli in the first quarter-final of the doubles category of the Status Athens Open at Athens, Greece on Thursday. The winning
duo wiped out their bleak opponents in straight sets 6-2, 6-1, in merely 43 minutes to book a berth in the semis of the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Challenger Tour event.
It was a brilliant display of sheer dominance and class from the German pair, who looked totally unplayable in the contest. Bachinger and Becker took the reins of the game right from the beginning and held them till the end, beating
their opponents in every segment of the game. The Germans orchestrated most of the rallies, keeping them short and professional to rocket away to victory in the round of eight.
Bachinger and Becker developed an excellent combination in the contest, something clearly lacking in the Swiss team. The Germans gave away no opportunity to their rivals to break their serve and stung five out of 11 break points
en route to victory. Six aces were fired from the Germans’ racquets while Allegro and Bohli registered just two.
The winning German pair was off to a flyer in the opening set, breaking their opponents in the very first game to lead 2-0. Bachinger and Beck won 13 of 15 first serve points while delivering 71 per cent of their serve on target.
The Swiss duo was also very good with their serve exactness but could only collect 16 of 41 total points in the opening set to remain at disadvantage.
A second serve break took Bachinger and Becker to an impassable lead of 5-2 in the opener. The Swiss pair finally submitted the first set to their superior opponents at 6-2 and trail 0-1 in the matchup. Nothing went their way in
the next set as well as they were again broken in the very first game. The German pair proved merciless to Allegro and Bohli in the next set and exploited every bit of mistake done by the Swiss team.
Bachinger and Becker fired four aces in the second set and bagged 12 of 14 first serve points to keep ahead of their opponents. They struck two more serve breaks in fifth and seventh game to conclude an emphatic victory at 6-1,
to move on to the semis of the Status Athens Open.
Next up for Bachinger and Becker is the Australian-American duo of Jordan Kerr and David Martin in the semi-final. Kerr and Martin won their quarter-final clash against the team of Dudi Sela and Igor Sijsling 4-6, 6-4, 10-7.
