Matthias Bachinger beats Aljaz Bedene in the qualifying draw – ExxonMobil Qatar Open 2012
Germany’s Matthias Bachinger dumped the Slovakian, Aljaz Bedene, in the second round qualifiers of the ExxonMobil Qatar Open to move one step closer to the main rounds of the tournament. The top seeded German registered a 6-3,
1-6, 6-3 victory over his Slovak opponent in one hour and fifty six minutes to move into the qualifying competition of the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour 250 event.
Bedene, ranked 165th in the world, made a good start in the first set, firing three aces and Bachinger registered merely one. Neither of the two players conceded a double fault, depicting the concentration with which
they were playing their service games. In terms of winning first service ratio, both men were standing on equal grounds, as Bachinger got a 67 per cent winning ratio while Bedene was 1 percent higher with 68 per cent. Bachinger won 64per cent first serve points
in the contest but Bedene was quite higher with 73% points won.
Bachinger was the better player on defending the break points faced, as he saved all three of his breakpoints. Bedene scored more aces than his opponent but he was unable to save the only breakpoint he faced. The Slovakian was
doing pretty well against the German but Bachinger did not give away any errors or free points to him to capitalise. This made the Slovakian reduce his pace as the first set progressed half way through. Bachinger won the first set 6-3 later.
Bedene had his revenge in the second set and did not let Bachinger win more than one game. He cashed in all of his three break opportunities in the set, while successfully defending four out of five serve breaks from his opponent
to get a substantial position early. Bedene also had a higher ratio in terms of winning points on first serve, as he secured a 63 per cent ratio as compared to the German’s 50 per cent. The breakpoints went in favour of Bedene as he saved four out of the five
he conceded and Bachinger remained fruitless in saving any of the breakpoints he faced. The Slovak went on to seal the second set in his favour at 6-1, levelling the matchup at one-all.
As the match entered into the third set, both players were aiming for a win, with one set apiece to their name. Neither of the two players could score any ace and Bachinger played decent shots by not conceding any double faults.
In the third and final set, Bedene won 50 per cent points on first serve but Bachinger was way ahead by winning 70 per cent points to inch closer to victory. Bachinger regained his form as he won the third set 6-3 and with it won the match to enter the next
round of the tournament.
