Matthias Bachinger crushes Roberto Bautista-Agut in the second round of the Status Athens Open
Fourth seeded German, Matthias Bachinger blew away Roberto Bautista-Agut of Spain in the second round of the Status Athens Open in Athens, Greece on Thursday. 134th ranked Bachinger took just 55 minutes before he wrapped
up an easy victory at 6-0, 6-2, to march into the quarter-finals of the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Challenger Tour event.
The contest appeared a one sided-affair right from the beginning as the bleak Spaniard looked in no sorts of form. Soon after the blistering start from the fourth seed German, it became evident that Bautista-Agut was a total mismatch
for Bachinger. The 23-year-old Spanish failed to hold his serve in any of the games in the opener and held serve only twice in the next set to bestow victory to the German.
24-year-old Bachinger took full advantage of his error-ridden opponent and pushed Bautista-Agut to a point of no return. The German cracked five serve breaks in the contest out of the 12 chances he crafted and never dropped his
serve in the two sets being played. He secured 54 of 82 total points played in the match, with the Spaniard lagging far behind at 28.
The German had a blistering start to the game, breaking the opponent’s serve in the second game and winning 90 per cent of his first serve points. Bautista-Agut failed to cope with the early pressure exerted by his strong opponent
and a series of unforced errors on his part was seen, including three double faults. Plenty of clean strokes from Bachinger’s racquet left the Spaniard answerless and he further dropped his serve in the fourth and the sixth game. Bachinger exhibited a brilliant
show of error-free tennis to race away to set point at 5-0 and registered his third consecutive serve break to seal the opener at 6-0.
The Spaniard put a little more effort in the following set and raised his first serve precision from 54 to 72 per cent. However, his shots kept failing to meet their marks, ending long and wide of the court most of the time. Bachinger
reeled off 16 out of 19 total serve points in the second set and clouted two serve breaks to reach match point at 5-2. Bautista-Agut had no option but to accept a humiliating defeat from the German, submitting the second set at 2-6.
Bachinger will take on the other Spaniard, Guillermo Alcaide in the quarter-final draw of the Status Athens Open. Alcaide stood victorious against the Irishman, Conor Niland to meet Bachinger in the round of eight at Athens.
