Matthias Bachinger downs Viktor Troicki in the second round – BRD Nastase Tiriac Trophy 2012
Upsets kept coming at the BRD Nastase Tiriac Trophy this season and another was witnessed on Thursday when the fourth seeded Serbian hot favourite, Viktor Troicki, lost in the second round battle against the 120th ranked
German, Matthias Bachinger. The unseeded German came up with an excellent display of clay-court tennis to drive the world number 30 out of the tournament, with the final scores settling at 6-3, 4-6, 7-6(2), in his favour.
Like their previous battle earlier this season, the Thursday’s contest also went to the wire. Troicki defeated Bachinger 7-6(6), 6-1, in the round of 16 at Doha, Qatar but couldn’t repeat his magic this time round. He hung in the
contest for two hours and 30 minutes before succumbing in the decisive set tie-breaker round to finish his voyage in Bucharest, Romania.
A number of major momentum swings were witnessed throughout the contest and both competitors kept labouring extremely hard to take the better of one another. Troicki lost the early battle when Bachinger came out firing at him right
from the beginning and clinched the opener in no time. The fourth seed Serbian regrouped in the following set and launched his onslaught to hunt down Bachinger and levelled the matchup at one-all. Intense tennis continued in the decisive third set and both
men stretched each other to their limits. The unseeded German finally found an opening in the tie-breaker round grabbed the vital chance with both hands to register an emphatic victory in the end.
Despite bagging 62 serve points compared to Bachinger’s 56, Troicki still couldn’t make to the winning mark. He evenly replied the five break point conversions from the German and kept moving neck-to-neck in the contest but a slump
in the last moments proved way too taxing for the fourth seed. He could merely secure two points in the decisive tie-breaker and Bachinger cruised to victory in style.
Bachinger will feature the all-German quarter-final of the BRD Nastase Tiriac Trophy, taking on the other surprise contender, Daniel Brands, on Friday. Brands stunned the eighth seed Ivan Dodig in the opening round and then outplayed
Jurgen Zopp to reach the round of eight.
