Matthias Bachinger outplays Guillermo Alcaide in the quarter-final of the Status Athens Open
Fourth seed Matthias Bachinger from Germany registered an easy victory against the 24-year-old Spaniard, Guillermo Alcaide in the quarter-final clash of the Status Athens Open at Athens, Greece on Friday. The German nabbed the
straight sets victory at 6-3, 6-4, taking just one hour and fifteen minutes to enter the semi-finals of the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Challenger Tour tournament.
It was an interesting game of tennis, with the German dominating most of the time in the matchup. Bachinger took the opening set in the ninth game to get the substantial advantage in the game and then carried on his momentum to
seal the next one to ensure victory. Although there was some lacking in his game, he still overwhelmed his bleak opponent, finishing off the contest in style.
The Spaniard had a first serve precision of 67 per cent in the game, while Bachinger followed him with 59. Alcaide failed to bag sufficient points to overtake the German opponent and was worn out in the contest by a high error
count, which included four costly double faults. 126 total points were played in the game with the Spanish clinching 54 and his strong opponent securing 72 of them en route to his victory.
Bachinger got his impact on the game very early, starting the opener with three fiery aces. He won 12 of 14 first serve points in the first set and displayed his brilliant return game to edge over the Spanish. The fourth seed crafted
four chances to strike serve breaks and registered one in the seventh game of the opening set to get to a commanding position of 5-3. The German fired two more aces in the ninth game to seal the first set at 6-3 and get one up in the contest.
The following set took off in the same manner as the first one did, with both players holding their serve in the opening six games. Bachinger finally converted his third break opportunity in the seventh game and then held his serve
to reach 5-3, inching closer to victory. Alcaide scored just 28 of the total 63 points being played in the second set and squandered one break chance to end on the losing side. The German delivered the final blow to Alcaide in the tenth game and dispensed
him out of the Challenger Tour event by winning the second set at 6-4.
Bachinger will be squaring off against the seventh seed Stephane Bohli of Switzerland in the semi-final round of the Status Athens Open. Bohli made an upset in the previous round by defeating the top seed Benjamin Becker in straight
sets, 6-3, 6-1, to make it to the round of four at Athens.
