Matthias Bachinger runs over top seed, Denis Istomin, in round two – IPP Open 2011 CH
Matthias Bachinger, German world No.109, made his way into the quarter-final stage of IPP Open 2011, ousting his second round challenger Denis Istomin, world No.74 and the top seed of the event, in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4, in an
hour and 18 minutes of hard indoor court rallying on Thursday, 24th November at Tali, Helsinki, Finland.
The two had met at Winston Salem before, however, that fixture ended in favour of the Uzbek. Levelling the head-to-head scores this time winning, Bachinger also made it through to the final stages of the ATP Challenger Tour event.
Anyways, with the two walking down the blue court, Istomin won the service toss, warmed up, and went on to start the match. Serving for game one, Istomin was knocked out early in the game as he lost his opening serve, breakpoint
win for Bachinger.
German 24-year-old went on to bag his second consecutive win as he served out game two, his opening serve, 2-0. Carrying on, Istomin finally turned down his side of the scoreboard winning game three to cut the lead to 2-1. Bachinger,
on the other hand, kept his pace and bagged winners of his serve.
With scores rising with the same difference, the set concluded as Bachinger served out game ten, 6-4, and went away winning. Leading the match with one set in his pocket, the lower ranked 24-year-old returned first in set two.
Istomin, switching sides, once again served first for the set opener, saved a near breakpoint, and rolled down the scoreboard, 1-0. Following the world No.74, Bachinger saved his set opening serve and levelled up, 1-1. Rallying
down a game each next both levelled up at 2-2 before Bachinger struck again.
Breaking Istomin in game five, 3-2, German world No.109 plunged into the lead and followed with a service winner, game six, 4-2. Cutting down the lead, Istomin fired a winner, game seven, however, was unable to break back and level
up any soon.
Statistically, the top seed did perform well; however, the in-form German had an extra bit to his play. With a spectacular percentage of his first serve winning points, 84 percent, Bachinger added that to his 2 breakpoint wins
to conclude with 72 points at the end of the fixture.
Bachinger, on the contrary, served out two out of the last three games of the set, winning, 6-4, and finishing off the fixture with mere difficulty and bringing another upset. Nevertheless, as the 24-year-old is not in the quarter-final
stage, faces Michal Przysiezny, Polish, for a spot in the semi-final of the ATP Challenger Tour event.
