Matthias Bachinger strains past Filippo Volandri into second round – BRD Nastase Tiriac Trophy 2012
German contender, Matthias Bachinger, bounced back from a set down to do away with the higher ranked Italian Filippo Volandri to secure a place in the second round of the 2012 BRD Nastase Tiriac Trophy on Monday, 23rd
April 2012 in Bucharest Romania. The pair battled it out for an hour and fifty two minutes before the German emerged as the victor with a 3-6, 6-1, 6-3 win.
This was only the pair’s second meeting this year and in their career having met once before in Casablanca, Morocco two weeks ago. Bachinger had secured a three-set win over Volandri back then also.
The German won the toss and comfortably placed himself on the scoreboard followed closely behind by the Italian. Breaking his opponent in the third game of the set, Volandri was able to secure a 3-1 lead. The match progressed on
serve from there on as neither player was able to subdue the other. Capitalizing on Bachinger’s double fault in the ninth game of the set, Volandri was able to secure a 6-3 win in the opener, going one up in the set score.
Down but definitely not out, Bachinger bounced back in the second set as he broke his opponent back to back in the third, fifth and seventh game securing a breadstick win, bringing the set score to even terms.
A set win a piece took the set into the decider. Albeit ranked higher than the German, Volandri was having a hard time overpowering the hard hitting German. The decider started with Bachinger’s serve being broken but the German
soon bounced back. He broke his opponent twice; once in the fourth and then in the sixth game to take the lead. From there on, the set progressed on individual serve with Bachinger serving out the set at 5-3 to seal his three sets win over the Italian.
In a contest that lasted nearly two hours, Bachinger hit a resounding total of nine aces with none to match from the Italian. With only one double fault and a 78 percent first serve win, Bachinger was able to ensure his survival
at the event and a spot in the second round.
The German now moves on ahead to play the fourth seeded Serb, Viktor Troicki. A seeded player at the event, Troicki received a bye into the second round where he plays the German for the second time this year and in his career.
The two had earlier met in the season in Doha with Troicki enjoying a comfortable straight sets win over the German.
