Matthias Bachinger surprises Pablo Andujar in opening round clash – Suisse Open Gstaad 2011
Sheer surprise for tennis fans, as the seventh seeded Spaniard, Pablo Andujar crashed out of the opening round of Credit Agricole Suisse Open Gstaad, at the hands of the 89th ranked German contestant, Matthias Bachinger
on Wednesday afternoon.
The contest was staged on the clay courts of the Credit Agricole Arena in Gstaad, Switzerland, with the unseeded Bachinger absolutely manhandling Andujar in the game. The German wrapped up his straight sets victory at 6-1, 6-4,
in just one hour and seven minutes of play to make a berth in the second round of the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour 250 tournament.
24-year-old Bachinger exhibited his belligerent form in the contest to simply outplay the seventh seeded Spaniard with utmost ease. He raced through the opening set without any real resistance from Andujar, who held serve in just
one game in the opener. The Spanish showed some signs of life in following set but couldn’t withstand the fury of Bachinger for long and submitted the game to let him in the next round.
The strong German serve remained unbroken in the entire contest, while Andujar dropped his serve on three different occasions in the matchup. Bachinger’s points winning proficiency was the key differentiating factor in the game,
as he magnificently secured 31 out of 35 first serve points in the contest en route to victory.
The German took hold of the game in the opening set with his accurate power-hitting to bag plenty of winners. Bachinger registered the first serve break of the day in the fourth game to reach 3-1 and then went on to crack in his
second straight break point conversion to extend his lead to 5-1. The unseeded German fired four aces and collected 12 out of 14 first serve points in the opening set to race to set point at 40-30 in the seventh game. Bachinger closed out the first set in
the most assertive manner at 6-1 to get the upper hand in the contest.
Worries continue to strike Andujar in the next set as well, with Bachinger breaking his serve in the very first game to lead 2-0. The Spaniard couldn’t recover from the early damage done by the serve break from Bachinger and eventually
got driven out of the matchup at 4-6, sending the German in the second round to play against Julien Benneteau of France for a place in the quarter-finals.
