The former Borussia Dortmund manager has joined the Bavarian giants and will replace Christian Nerlinger for the role.
Christian Nerlinger was relieved of his duties on Monday, July 2, after serving for the role of the sporting director for four years. He was reportedly sacked after Bayern’s disappointing campaign last term. Jupp Heynckes’ side
were runners-up in the Bundesliga and lost in the final of the UEFA Champions League and the DFB-Pokal to the likes of http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Chelsea-c38786 and Borussia Dortmund.
Club president, Uli Hoeness, hailed Nerlinger’s work for the side in the past four years and admitted that the former sporting director had made a huge contribution. He added that he still maintains a great working relationship
with Nerlinger and is hopeful that it continues.
Hoeness insisted that Sammer’s appointment would certainly be a beginning of a new era of football at Bayern Munich. He insisted that the club is looking to make a strong return to proceedings after a dismal campaign last term
and is confident that things will go brilliantly.
“On behalf of the club, I wish to expressly thank Christian Nerlinger for his work for FC Bayern over the last four years. I very much hope our excellent personal relationship will continue as it is,” he was quoted as saying in
an interview to the club’s official website.
On the other hand, Christian Nerlinger wished Matthias Sammer all the luck for the future after the latter’s appointment. He insisted that he has spent four great years with Germany’s most successful club and he will always relish
those memories. He added that he intends to maintain a good relationship with everyone at Bayern Munich and is looking forward to a successful campaign from the Bavarians.
“As always, I wish FC Bayern all the best and every possible success. I’ve spent a good and very intensive time here and will maintain my links to FC Bayern as a friend of the club,” Nerlinger concluded.
Matthias Sammer has immense experience at the highest level as he was the technical director at the DFB for six years. The former midfielder also won the Bundesliga as manager of Borussia Dortmund in 2002.
