Matti Breschel missed his chances at World Championships after Vuelta crash – Cycling News
Rabobank’s rider Matti Breschel’s Vuelta a Espana came to an end after the stage 6 crash as the Danish player injured his knee and bruised his chin and was taken to hospital for x-rays.
Breschel started his career in 2005 as team CSC signed a two year contract with the cyclist and one year prior to signing the team Matti stated, “I hope to get in the team, but in the beginning I just want to learn the game and to learn the races. Somewhere
I know that I’m in for a beating.”
The 26-year-old showed an impressive display of his sprinting skills in 2008 as he won the Philadelphia International Championship in 2008 followed by a stage 21 win at the Vuelta a Espana same year and he is now amongst the most experienced and skilled
riders in the team Rabobank.
Matti was to lead his team Rabobank in the World Championships starting on September 25 because of impressive overall performances in the event previously as he won a bronze medal in 2008 and silver in 2010.
National Coach Lars Bonde mentioned that his whole team before the world championships is in shape and players are motivated before the big tour in Denmark as Lars was talking to the media before the crash while he said, “I look at the riders, as they must
be able to both hold their position in the field to protect Matti along the way and then be there for him in the final.”
A clearer picture about the rider’s future will only be confirmed after the x-rays as the crash seems quite serious and Luuc Eisenga of team Rabobank has already commented on the issues as he mentioned that the rider has broken two of his right hand fingers
and had to go through a surgery. He further added that Breschel’s participation in the world championships seems suspicious after the crash as he said, “Normally one week rest and assessment of the situation, forecast worlds impossible now.”
It will be really tragic for Breschel if he did not make it through to the World Championships 2011 as this opportunity to ride in front of the home crowd at a World event does not comes too often.
