Matti Breschel wins the third stage of the Vuelta a Burgos 2012
Matti Breschel of Team Rabobank bagged his first victory at the Vuelta a Burgos after a tremendous performance during the third stage of the race.
The cyclist completed the 159 kilometre chase to Lerma in a quickest time of 3 hours, 52 minutes and 35 seconds and occupied the top podium spot.
Nacer Bouhanni of Team FDJ-BigMat, Ben Swift of Team Sky Pro Cycling, Allan Davis of Team Orica GreenEdge and Daniele Ratto of Team Liquigas-Cannondale secured the next four positions in the respective order.
Team Sports Director Erik Dekker was delighted by Matti’s performance, "We knew that there were opportunities for Matti on this stage," he briefed.
"The last few hundred meters were going uphill and it was nastier than mentioned in the itinerary”.
“That mentioned an ascent rate of 2 percent, but we could establish for ourselves this morning that it was more than 6 percent”.
"Matti said that it did help him an awful lot, we knew exactly what was coming. He stayed in control very well”.
“That last turn was not a 90 degree turn, Matti could get through it at full speed and after that it was a piece of cake. A beautiful victory”.
The 27-year-old was having a dry season and the win brings his first victory of the 2012 season.
Matti’s only other notable performances of the season include, a third place finish at the Gent-Wevelgem and a ninth position at the Tour of Flanders 2012.
Breschel grabbed 25 important points during the race and achieved the top spot at the point category of the race.
Nacer Bouhanni of Team FDJ-BigMat and Ben Swift of Team Sky Pro Cycling secured the second and the third positions with 20 and 16 points respectively.
Daniel Moreno still leads the overall classifications with a gap of two seconds over Team Sky Cyclist, Sergio Luis Henao.
Matti Breschel of Team Rabobank is further 7 seconds behind at the third position while Giovanni Visconti and Stefano Garzelli holds the fourth and the fifth positions in the respective order.
Team Katusha leads the team’s classifications with Team Rabobank, Team Acqua & Sapone, Team Movistar and Team Argos-Shimano holding the second, third, fourth and fifth positions respectively.
