Question:

Mattress being cold?

So I have the sheet over the mattress in his crib of course...but I don't like how everything is still cold. The sheets are not thick enough. So I thought about putting a thick blanket underneath the sheet..but then that makes everything softer and the chances of SIDS increases. Because his face will be all comfty and forming around his face...yall know what I am talking about lol. So that defeats the whole purpose of a firm mattress. What do you guys do about this? I have just been dressing him a little more warmly and with a blanket of course. But his arms are always sticking out and cold. We just recently started laying him in his crib.

  1. You need a mattress pad cover!!

  2. Get a swaddling blanket it wraps them tight (arms and all) you could also just throw his sheets in the dryer for a min before laying him down. They doo have mattress covers that are thicker and safe. Also a mattress pad will help.

  3. You need a waterproof mattress cover. They're about $12 at Wal-Mart. They fit over the mattress under the sheets, nice and snug, no added Sids risk. They soak up the spit up and will protect the mattress so it's not so cold on his sheets. If it's still cold, swaddle him or put him in flannel winter jammies! Good luck!

  4. fill ah hot water bottle before sleep time.

put it in his bed (without baby)

leave it for 1/4 hour or so

remove bottle, and put baby in warm bed.

they don't seem to notice the cold to be honest!

  5. they sell mattress covers at babies r us just for thatt reson or you can get the ones that are waterproof..its funny you asked this question, my husband and i were just talking about this the other day and went to the store to see what they had.. hope that helps

  6. I thought about all that too. Even when it was so hot out when I'd pick my daughter up her arms would be freezing. I was afraid to put a blanket on her though because what if that gets bunched around her face.  Then I bought one of those swaddeling blankets that velcro around her and can't come loose. She slept longer and was warm. They come in heavy material and lighter one.  That worked until she was 5 months but then I felt bad wrapping her up once she started using her hands more.  Now I just put the PJ's on her that come 3 in a pack from Gerber. They have them at walmart or Kmart etc.  They have feet and long sleeves but are a very light cotton material.

  7. I do use a blanket with my 5 month old and have since the day he was born, I know that you're not really supposed to, but I like a blanket and it's just what I did.

I also dress my son in a long sleeve onesie.  That's all, just the long sleeve onesie, because that's all that is sticking out in the air.

  8. I used to put a folded doona under the cot sheet and dress the babies up very warmly.  They'd always kick off the top sheets.  In winter I put a little oil heater in the room on low just to take the edge out of the air.  If it was hot when they went to bed, but cooler in the really early morning, I'd put them down and then chuck a jumper on them before I went to bed, they never usually woke up.
