It was widely expected that either http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Phillip-Hughes-c2185 will get a chance in Watson’s absence but the selectors have gone for a more experienced cricketer in shape of Quiney, who scored a brilliant 85 against South Africa last week, representing
Australia ‘A’.
Quiney looked at complete control against one of the finest bowling attacks of the world, convincing the selectors about his credentials for international cricket.
The 30-year-old cricketer made his first-class debut for Victoria in 2007 but feels that he has improved immensely as a cricketer since the last couple of seasons.
“I guess my last two years were my most consistent and I thought there might be a little window, over 12 or 18 months, where I could try and get my foot in and I've needed to continue to make runs,” said the talented batsman.
The gutsy player has scored more than three thousand runs in the 53 first-class matches he has played so far, with the help of seven hundreds and 16 half-centuries.
Quiney further added that he is now an experienced cricketer and can absorb the pressure of international cricket. The left-handed batsman does not believe that age is going to be a hurdle for him to excel at the global stage of the game as some other Australian
cricketers like Hussey and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/MJ-North-c1982 also started their career after a handful years of domestic cricket.
“Fifty-odd first-class matches, I hope that helps,” Quiney mentioned. “We've seen in the past, Mike Hussey is probably the greatest of them all, but when another veteran, Marcus North first came in he started pretty well as well. Only time will tell but
I'm hoping my maturity will help me.”
