Maud Le Car and Bianca Buitendag shine in Bréti Girls Pro Junior Semi-finals – Surfing News
Bianca Buitendag from South Africa and Maud Le Car from France put on superb performances in their respective Semi-finals of the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 1-Star Bréti Girls Pro Junior that went down at Les Dunes in Brétignolles-sur-Mer, France, on Tuesday, April 17.
The successful result in the Semi-finals served to carry both the girls into the Final of the competition. Accompanying the two winners were France’s Joanne Defay and her compatriot Josephine Costes who secured runner-up position in the first and second Semi-final respectively to successfully extend their life in the event.
The surfing conditions prevailing at the event site on Tuesday turned out to be really challenging, putting the skills and experience of the young surfers to test. There were very few scoring opportunities on offer and thus the situation demanded extreme caution and alertness in order to capitalise on any opening that could be detected.
The first Semi-final pitted Buitendag against Defay, Basque County’s Leticia Canales Bilbao and her compatriot Ariane Ochoa.
The South African surfer had been exhibiting a formidable form since morning, following one exquisite performance with another. Bringing the momentum into her latest battle, she asserted her dominance over her rivals to grab an early lead and maintain it until the end to eventually seal the fate of the first Semi-final in her favour. Her heat-total of 15.90 points received absolutely no challenge from the local as well as Basque County talent, thus making her progress into the Final of the event pretty smooth.
Defay finished behind Buitendag in second place with a heat-total of 10.16 points, thus advancing through into the final stage of the event as well.
Bilbao and Ochoa, however, were unable to ensure their survival after rounding out the bottom-two positions with a heat-total of 5.33 and 4.00 points respectively.
The second Semi-final saw Le Car give her local support plenty of reason to cheer their lungs out as she put on an impressive performance to claim first place with a heat-total of 12.33 points.
Costes got her name added to the Finals’ line-up as well after grabbing runner-up position with a heat-total of 8.57 points.
Spain’s Lucia Martino and her compatriot Erika Franco got removed from the contention for the event title as well after scoring a 4.57 and 5.20 points respectively.
