Maui or Kauai? Which is better?

Which is a better vacation? And why?

Kauai - quiet, older adults, golfing

Maui - family island, all types of water activity, volcano, hiking, black sand beach, red sand beach, Hana, etc

I suspect every time I answer this question, I answer it differently, depending on my mood.  Maui is the ultimate resort island.  Great beaches, lots of 4 & 5 star hotels, more shopping & nightlife.  But Kauai is so green & beautiful & it is much less developed.  Today my vote goes to Kauai.

Kauai.  It's more private and has gorgeous nature experiences.  The beaches aren't meat markets.  Excellent for hiking.

Maui! There are alot of low costs trips that you can take like driving to the top of Haleakala is only 10 per car. Also drive to Hana and see the 7 sacred pools for like 10 as well. There are activities that are more expensive but if you do your research you can get things inexpensively and have a great time! Aloha!

Maui... it has EVERYTHING to offer. it's a little more developed than kauai, but that's what makes it better. the maui ocean center is awesome and there's so many activities (too many to say. check out one of those brochure stands they have at the airport or basically anywhere.) Kauai can get boring. i mean you can only go to the beach so many times a week. And if you're looking for the "postcard hawaii" (the undeveloped, lush green, tropical island beauty) come to maui and take the drive out to the east side where you'll find my favorite place... Hana. It's truly the hawaii all the tourist look for. if you'd like to know anymore, let me know.

if you are older and/or don't have a family trip planned, kauai is more scenic and a lot less crowded.  However, there are more tourist attractions, shopping, and hotels on maui.  It's all personal taste. I liked kauai because summertime traffic in maui is crazy.

Maui No Ka Oi....  (Maui is the best!)

More to do...more nightlife...more water sports....bigger island...more diverse, more exploration.  Drive to the top of the volcano...and bike down...visit Hana (my community)...  The road to Hana is rated top scenic drive in America....  Deep Sea Fishing at it's best...

Kauai is beautiful....and has it's own personality...but it shuts down pretty much by 9 or 10 pm... Not nearly as many beaches to swim...
