Mauricio ‘Shogun’ Rua knocks out Brandon Vera – UFC News
The highly anticipated bout between Mauricio ‘Shogun’ Rua and Brandon Vera ended up in an upset for fans. While Vera was the crowd favourite, it was Rua who walked away with the victory. During the fourth, Rua was able to finally earn a TKO victory over
Vera through a spree of brutal hits.
Although Rua won, he was surprisingly not impressed with his own performance. After the fight, Rua, the victor, apologised to his fans, believing he was not up to the mark.
“I’m sorry guys, I didn’t give my best today, but for sure I will give my best in the future,” said Rua who has now upgraded to 21 wins and 7 losses in his portfolio.
“The most important thing is the victory. I respect Brandon a lot. He gave a good fight so let’s see what happens next,” he added.
In other words, Rua did admit the fact that he found difficult to go through Vera. According to him, Brandon had put up a tough fight, and there were times when he thought he would fall.
Rua further said, “I'll improve, but you'll see my best for sure in the future,” realising that fans and UFC officials might be disappointed with his show.
For now, Rua is looking forward to a title shot at Jon Jones, UFC light heavyweight titlist. He already had demanded a match before his encounter with Brandon, but Dana White, UFC president, asked him to prove his mettle against Vera.
Considering Rua’s comeback performance against Vera, it can be said that the light heavyweight is still not up to the mark. Even though he won, he was still showing signs of fatigue, something on which Jon Jones will very easily capitalise.
Therefore, a title shot for Rua might not be possible. The victor will have to improve and show better results, if he wants Dana White to consider him against Jones. This victory might add to the portfolio of Vera but his performance was not up to par.
For earning a shot at Jones, Rua needs to improve and come up with better showdowns.
