Mauricio Sulaiman rebuffs rumours of stripping of Mayweather’s title – Boxing News
Rumours of the WBC planning to strip of Mayweather’s title have been in the air for long. Earlier today, Mauricio Sulaiman, Secretary General to the World Boxing Council, brushed aside all the rumours saying Mayweather is a capable fighter and he is and
will remain the champion until any of his opponents beats him down.
Floyd Mayweather Jr. currently holds the WBC welterweight championship. He grabbed the title from Victor Ortiz by defeating him on September 17 with a knockout. He is an unbeaten American boxer who currently holds 42 wins and 26 knockouts in his portfolio.
Mayweather had earlier said that he will be moving up to 154-pounds in order to have a bout with Miguel Cotto for the WBA championship currently being held by the latter. The bout is scheduled for May 5 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. During all this transition
of Mayweather, rumours emerged of the WBC stripping Mayweather’s title since his title defence bout has been long due and now he has moved up in weight.
When asked, Mauricio Sulaiman said, “There was miscommunication. Floyd Mayweather holds a record for winning the most WBC titles in five weight divisions. Mayweather has an eleven year history with the WBC. He is the most loyal fighter and we are in full
support of him and his career.”
He added, “The WBC's concept of interim-titles is still in the rules. The interim-title was created many, many years ago and specifically for situations like this one. The reason [we rarely use] the interim concept, is because it was abused tremendously
- especially by other organizations and it created so much confusion all over the world with the boxing fans. We do still have in our rules the possibility of accepting the interim championship. It will only be done in very, very special circumstances like
this one.”
As of now, Mayweather is going to face Miguel Cotto, but it will not be a title defence match for Mayweather. Mayweather will then go to jail to serve his 90-day jail sentence. After his sentence his over successfully, Mayweather will have the chance to
go for a title defence match.
