Maurizio Boicchi believes F1 teams have learnt enough to deal with 2013 Pirellis – Formula 1 news
Chief technical officer for Pirelli, Maurizio Boicchi, believes that the F1 teams have learnt enough from the tyre selection for 2012 F1 season to adjust with the new Pirelli tyres in 2013 F1 season.
“During 2012, more or less all the teams learned much better how to use our tyres,” Boicchi told AUTOSPORT. “One of the key criteria that improved their consistency was the fact that we have seen and measured much less [wheel] spinning from them - which
means they have learned how to manage this phenomenon. It [wheel spin] is terrible, as you wear the tyres fast, heat them up and they degrade very, very rapidly.”
Boicchi added that Pirelli aims to be a bit more aggressive with their tyre selection for the new season so that they can introduce more pitstops and new racing strategies for the teams.
Pirelli had provided the teams with the 2013 prototypes to try during the Friday practice session ahead of the season ending Brazilian Grand Prix. Boicchi admitted that it helped them to get a positive feedback on the tyres from the team. He said that the
temperatures during the official F1 testing in February are so terrible that it is impossible to get any clear information. He added that the teams are so focused on the car’s development and aerodynamics by then that they do not give the tyres much thought
so that it becomes difficult to get some clear perception from them.
The 2012 F1 season began with much inconsistency as there were seven different drivers winning the first seven races. The teams were obviously having a hard time trying to adjust with the new tyres.
Pirelli’s motorsport director, Paul Hembery, has already stated that the 2013 tyres will be different in terms of compounds and construction which will greatly affect the aerodynamics of the cars but the teams will not be in for any huge surprises.
Mercedes Ross Brawn is of similar opinion saying that the F1 teams are expert enough to adjust with the new tyres as the teams have better support organisation with them now. He told that the risk with the new tyres might be reduced but cannot be completely
ignored.
