Palermo President believes that sanctioning the use of goal-line officials despite the presence of technology will only increase cost of organizing football games.
Maurizio Zamparini has slammed FIFA’s decision to utilise line-refs in every match despite the introduction of goal-line technology, and has stressed that such a practice only encourages inefficient use of resources.
Yesterday, the International Football Association Board voted in favour of utilising a goal-line technology to help the referees in making decisions about whether the ball has fully crossed into the goal.
The decision also included the continued use of line-refs to serve the same purpose, as was introduced in UEFA Champions League and Europa League.
Zamparini has reacted to this dual confirmation, and believes that using to different resources for the same purpose is a waste of precious resource.
The Palermo chief was adamant that FIFA’s decision to encourage the use of line-refs despite their overlapping duties is not a step in the right direction for ensuring better judgement in the games, but a step towards increasing pointless costs.
The Rosanero President went on to stress that the electronic apparatus alone is enough to serve the purpose, and stressed that FIFA’s decision to sanction line-refs for every game is only an attempt at business.
Zamparini was of view that increasing the number of referees in the match does not ensure a more transparent game, and reiterated the need for the international football governing body to remove the people and costs that are not necessary.
While talking to the press, the Italian businessman said:
“It’s rubbish. It is only here so as to spend more money and not so as to determine results in terms of better regulation of the game. It would be enough to establish an electronic system. Football is, unfortunately, like this. It’s a business. It’s not
the case that things improve by increasing the number of referees. It’s just a waste of money.”
The use of technology in the game of football took a lot of hype, when some important goals in high-profile games of Euro 2012 were disallowed by the unsuspecting referees on the field, and led FIFA to debate and approve the technology.
