Borussia Monchengladbach have agreed to sell star striker Marco Reus to rivals Borussia Dortmund at the end of the season. The club has claimed that they had offered the player a new deal to stay but he refused to extend his current
contract and opted to leave.
Eberl claimed that the club had negotiations with the player of a possible extension to his current deal as Reus has become a vital player for the side in the past few years. He admitted that the striker has played an important
role in the revival of the team this season but also expressed his disappointment on the player’s decision to leave.
The chief stated that he and the club are upset on the transfer as they expected Reus to stay after a brilliant season which saw Monchengladbach in the top four at the end of the first-half of the campaign.
“We wanted to extend his contract, as he's developed into an important player. His salary would have multiplied with the offer we made him, but he informed us that he would not accept it. I know that he can earn a lot more elsewhere
and unfortunately we just have to accept that,” he was quoted as saying in an interview.
The Director of Sport further added that the German international had ample opportunities at his current side as he is a regular member of the starting team so he saw no reason for the switch. However, he insisted that there is
nothing his side can do now as the deal has already taken place and wished the player the best for the future.
“We offered him excellent sporting prospects; he's in the starting line-up in a club in the top third of the table. Nevertheless, he sees better opportunities elsewhere and is a big shame from our point of view,” he concluded.
Marco Reus was signed by Borussia Monchengladbach in the summer of 2009 from Rot Weiss Ahlen and signed a four-year deal. The player has since appeared in 79 Bundesliga matches for the Foals and has scored 28 times in the process.
