Max Mirnyi and Daniel Nestor advance into the semis at Sony Ericsson Open
The second seeded pair of Belarusian Max Mirnyi and Canadian Daniel Nestor destroyed the eighth seeded pair of Swede Robert Lindstedt and Romanian Horia Tecau to advance in the semis of the 2011 Sony Ericsson Open at Miami on Wednesday.
They registered a 7-5, 6-0 win over their rivals.
The winning combination of Belarusian and the Canadian, who are in great form and have a 10-4 win-loss record, dumped the Spanish pair of Feliciano Lopez and Fernando Verdasco after bouncing back from a set down to be victorious.
They then overpowered the Ukrainian Russian pair of Sergiy Stakhovsky and Mikhail Youzhny to reach this spot.
Ranked 44th in the world, Lindstedt and Tecau have a 3-3 win-loss record so far. They overpowered Swede Austrian pair of Simon Aspelin Julian Knowle in straight sets in the first round. They then moved on ahead to trash
the American pair of John Isner and Sam Querrey in straight sets to reach the quarterfinals.
Mirnyi and Nestor showed superb skills right from the start of the opening set as they held their opening serve superbly. They fired four aces and clobbered less double faults in the opening set. The winning pair had a higher first
share 76 per cent as compared to their rival’s 64 percent registering an amazing 95 per cent win on it. In addition to this, they saved the only breakpoint and converted one out of six breakpoint opportunities to their advantage in the eleventh game to clinch
the set with a 7-5 win.
Ranked third in the world, the Belarusian Canadian pair maintained their form in the final set. They reeled off six straight games to clinch the match with a bagel win. They found four breakpoint opportunities in this set and converted
three to their advantage. Mirnyi and Nester perfected their co-ordination as they conceded zero breakpoint and clobbered zero double faults. They also had a much higher first serve share and an impressive 82 percent win on it.
Lindstedt and Tecau on the other hand played poorly and committed several unforced errors and three double faults. Furthermore, they only found a single breakpoint opportunity and had a poor first serve share to eventually lose
the match in 70 minutes.
Mirnyi and Nestor will next face 4th seeded pair of Austrian Jurgen Melzer and German Philipp Petzschner who reached this spot after overwhelming Israeli pair of Jonathan Erlich and Andy Ram in 4-6, 6-4, 10-8.
